Common sense would suggest that having ability, like being smart, inspires confidence. It does, but only while the going is easy. The deciding factor in life is how you handle setbacks and challenges. People with a growth mindset welcome setbacks with open arms.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Helene the owner of AkuaMode and had a little talk on confidence and how she can help us find ours. She is a young woman in her early 20’s with a lot of confidence so who better to ask for a little guidance in that area than her. If you would like to hear our conversation you may find the audio below.
Akua Mode‘s purpose is to inspire young people to believe in who they are and help find that confidence that will take them a million places. Wow! Odd to say, her new found hobby of blogging is what has helped her grow her confidence. She found herself to be lacking in the confidence department and decided to work on it. That is something we all should be able to do. From time to time, we need to sit down and assess what we are lacking in life. Once we notice that an area in our life needs development, we need to be proactive and fix it. No one else will help you unless you are willing to help yourself and openly seek the help. It is much easier to stay in your comfort zone than to open up to change. However, on our journey of self development a lot of change happens while we are growing and becoming better people. Hence, opening up and welcoming change in your life is always a good first step as Helene took.
Something that strikes me is we never realize how many people are in the same struggle as we. As long as we are not the first people on Earth there is always somebody else that has gone through what you are also going through. They have answers, solutions and guidance to help you. There are communities and various platforms that such as Helene’s blog that are looking to help people out on their journey. Once again, you need to let people know what you are in so the information may be fed to you.
As Travis Bradberry phrased it, if you want to grow welcome your setbacks with open arms. That is the only way you will learn how to better yourself. How you take your flaws, setbacks and challenges to turn them into a stepping stone to greatness depends on you. Helene said if you are shy, there are other shy people who want to hear from you specifically as they can relate to you. Use that to develop your confidence!
Helene’s 3 step guide to building your confidence:
Generally you should fake it until you make it in all you areas of your life but since we’re asking for steps:
1. Be assertive in who you are.
2. Praise yourself daily
3. Accept your flaws.
Confidence is being assertive in who you are. We are all a working progress. No one was born confident. See the good in you and magnify it. See the bad in you and work on it. Spend energy on being a better person and not how you are not enough of a person.
If you don’t leave with anything else today, I want you to at least understand that despite your flaws and all you are a great person and will only become better as you work on developing the person you are.
Her favorite post – We are humans not colors, speaks of being placed in a box and how who we are is not determined by the color of our skin. She loves this one the most because it was written while she was filled with emotions. Do check her blog out! AkuaMode
